CHAPTER 35

We choose our joys and sorrows long

before we experience them.

—Khalil Gibran

As they walked out of the library and Fray Francisco left, André asked Ana Dee if they could discuss a different matter. He followed her to the living room. He had been thinking maybe Hermann had a point and he should get Ana Dee’s opinion and not assume she agreed with him.

They sat in the living room and she said, “I am glad you want to talk because I need to tell you something as well.”

“Would you like to go first?”

“I think I prefer to hear you first.”

“Très bien.” André got down on one knee. “Will you marry me, ma chérie?”

Ana Dee let out a little sigh. “Before I give you an answer, please sit back up next to me.” She nervously took his hands in hers.

“Whatever it is, I won’t change my mind, mon amour.”

“André, I know that you have loved or courted others before me.”

“I can’t deny that. They meant nothing. You are my one true love.”

“Perhaps you think I haven’t loved before.”

“Ma chérie, what happened before us is of no importance.”

“Well, it might be. Please let me explain. Over three years ago, I thought I was in love with a very special person. We never courted because he left to fight in the war.”

“So he died in battle?”

“No . . . well . . . I don’t think so. He only wrote to me once this whole time. The point is that he might still come back—I mean, to Santo Tomás.”

“Do you still love him?”

“No, of course not, André. I would not have agreed to our relationship if I thought so. That is what I want to explain, I do love you now. I want you to know that if he, that person, comes back, I will not betray you with him.”

“Ma chérie, I don’t think you had to tell me about your previous love, if ever it was that. But thank you for trusting me with your secret. I don’t even want to know who that ‘special person’ is or was. If he comes back and you don’t introduce us, I will be more than happy not knowing him. I will admit it might make me jealous if I did know him. However, I trust you with all my heart. So now, will you say you will marry me?”

“Yes, I will marry you, mon chérie.”

André left, excited. He couldn’t wait to buy the rings.
